Autumn Queen

Flower crowns are beautiful and I fully support them, but my heart belongs to autumn.
I can't be the first gal to pin fall leaves in her hair, but it was a lot of fun. Everyone should do it.
I miss having a camera that works, focuses reliably, and takes clear pictures, but I'm just gonna keep rolling. The blurriness is, um, an artistic choice? Sure.
Seriously considering just wearing leaves in my hair now. Natural and temporary hair accessories. I dig it.

Summer Sets

Friends! It's good to be writing this. Really. I'm back at my beloved Mount Holyoke and already having an immense amount of fun. I love my friends, my room, my campus. My classes. It's delicious to report on all the love in my heart because I'm content. I love telling you so.
I know I've been neglecting this blog. There's a reason. Well uh, there's a number of reasons: school, my camera's tripod socket is caput, trying to have a social life, work, oh my god school. But honestly? Clothes have been a bummer lately. And that breaks my fragile heart. I love clothes. You may have noticed.
Nothing fits. I haven't undergone a radical weight change or inadvertently bought a bunch of ill-fitting things. But suddenly it seems like all of my pants are either far too big or far too small, with legs almost uniformly extending far past my own and thus hugging my calves in what feel like all the wrong places. Shirts are too long or too short. Busts are too tight. Waistlines disagree with my natural waist. Even my socks and shoes feel a little off.
What's up with that? And of course this is the culture I occupy, so not only do my clothes feel alien, but my body feels alien. It's so easy to do that backflip entirely unconsciously: I barely even notice those moments where I start blaming the lines of my body for an ill-fitting dress, or the way I put pressure on the outer edges of my feet for the way my boots fit. Who is this creature? I don't remember my polka dot jeans gaping at the waist and drowning my legs. I don't remember my teal loafers sliding around on my feet. I seem to have forgotten what shape my butt, my thighs, my breasts are.
It's no fun to be an alien to your own dang self.
Getting dressed can be this weird crisis, this burden. But I'm trying to work through it. I'm gonna go to Goodwill soon and look for clothes that fit. Here's hoping I find some? I've also got a pair of jean-like jeggings on the way (size 16, "short" inseam). Cross your fingers for me.
Ah, I've lead my glorious return to Thrift-o-Rama with some of that discordant bodily realness of mine. Sorry-not-sorry. Here are a few pictures of the outfit I wore today, which mostly does fit, though I have to safety pin the bust of this blouse closed.
And here are some pictures from Convocation! It just so happens to feature the same skirt and belt. I'm predicatable. Oh well. This was, um, more than two weeks ago. I looked cute though. I'm lucky blue is my class color. I look so striking in blue.

Summer Simmer

My little sister goes back to school tomorrow. So do I, Thursday night. Now for Clare it's a matter of getting on a bus (and starting 5th grade!!!). For me it means a looooong Amtrak ride. Emphasis on long.
Still, I guess summer's really over. Culturally, anyway. I went out with a bang. Which is to say I took pictures of myself at a public pool. I think only one lifeguard saw, but it was still very liberating. Also my hair looked surprisingly cute sans product, post water.
I love this bikini, but I don't love the way it rolls down. I wish Swimsuits for All accommodated extremely short waisted people such as myself, because I love this style!
Does this masquerade well as a cool fashion shoot location? It's just the very old shed at the public pool. They sold snacks out of it when I was a kid. Now it's full of junk. I was standing on ants.

For Today is Your Day of All Days

When my baby sister was a toddler, she loved Noggin, a children's programming channel that I think has been acquired by Nickelodeon. Several times a day all the little network characters would have a party and sing this song:
"Today is your birthday! We're so glad you came along! Today is your birthday, so we're singing you this song! Now you're older, now you're smarter--wow, you've really learned a lot! Now you're older, now you're smarter! There's no telling where you'll stop!"
This was directed at 2 year olds, but it jives with me still.
Today is my birthday! My neighbor was having a garage sale and gave me this hat for free. I don't think she knows it's my birthday, but I'm going to pretend it was intended as a gift.
Also I totally broke the screwy thingy on my camera, so I apologize for the weird angle of all these pictures. Funny--the camera is maybe 18 months old, and the tripod about eight years. The camera broke first.

Ain't No Sin

I had a period in my life when I would pretty much only wear hacked up tees either bought at thrift stores or stolen from my brother. I dunno. I was determined to be as sloppy as a 16 year old Catholic school student could get away with being.
This shirt is ancient. I remember buying it with my friend Rosemary when we were 16 or 17 at the thrift store near our school. Their men's tees were like a quarter. I went to town with those things. Last night I further modified what my high school self had already, um, spruced up, but only because both sleeves had massive holes.
It's sloppy, but sometimes I wear things more for what they represent than what they actually look like.
I probably should not have worn my giant ugly (but terribly serviceable!) bra with this creation, but that's just the way things worked out today.
Smiling is outlawed. Tell your friends.

Dog Days

One week from today, I will be 20 years old. That's weird. I should probably make the most of being a teenager. What do teenagers do? Tell their parents that it's not a phase, it's who they are? Listen to that one song entitled "Teenagers?" Start terrible garage bands? I think I might be low on time. Guess I'll stick to floral skirts and waiting out the summer.
I got this shirt at Goodwill and will evidently never accept that it just wasn't made for a chest like mine. Please excuse how transparently ill fitting it is.

Good Day Sunshine

I've had this dress for months. Without fail, I put it on, see that I look bangin, and wonder why I don't wear it more often until I take three steps and it rides up six inches. Bodycon and I have never quite meshed.
Ah well. I went out to dinner with for my dad's birthday, an activity that mostly involved sitting down and enjoying the spanakopita. In the future I'll probably pair this with tights and leggings.
